Hebrews 11:1
What is faith? It is the confident assurance that
something we want is going to happen. It is the certainty
that what we hope for is waiting for us, even though we
cannot see it up ahead.
We have all heard it: "Faith, the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not see;" But what does that mean? I like the above translation better. "confident assurance" I can understand that, I can take a bite out of that. Whatever "IT" is, we can be confidently and have assurance that "it" will happen. But not just anything, the things we hope for. We cannot see them but we KNOW they are there. Think about driving down a road you know, you have it memorized, you drive it all the time possibly everyday, or two times or more a day. You are driving along, you know what is over the next hill, around the next curve. We know when to slow down, when we can speed up, when we need to watch our speed because there is ALWAYS a cop around the bend. You see God is like this. We pray for needs we see and we pray and we pray, But do we believe? Do we have Faith that our prayers are going to be answered? We should KNOW there is blessings around the corner just because we have prayed, Knowing just as we know there is a convenience store around the next corner on that stretch or road we travel everyday. Why are we surprised when God answers our prayers? Why do we doubt when we pray? Why do we think of the negative when we get blessed from God? Thank you Father for answering prayers, but now there is this other thing that is bothering me, ..............We doubt that God will answer our prayers, then when He does, we start thinking about the negative.
How do churches grow? I have been in churches before that pray for more people to come, and then in the same breath doubt if they can afford a larger worship center, to hold the new people, and how would they get new people to lead these new people, they worry so much about HOW they handle growth, that they hinder growth. Faith, we talk about it, preach on it, pray for it, tell others that they need more of it..............but what do we do to get it?
I believe faith comes from experience. If you pray for something and God answers that prayer, isn't it easier to do it again? If God is telling you something, and you obey what He wants you to do, and miracles happen because you were obedient to Him, your faith grows. If you pray for something or someone and the answer doesn't happen, right after you lift your head, does this cause our faith to diminish? Yeah, sometimes. But, God never said He would answer within 5 seconds of our asking. He just said He would answer. Much of the lessons are learned by waiting, you know: that good old word we love so much: Patience. Faith is KNOWING that regardless of the circumstances, the "facts", what the Doctor or other Experts say, we believe God will answer. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but He WILL answer. Because we have prayed, and He has heard us.
Faith: "the evidence of things not seen......" Can you imagine a court room where lawyers tell the story of their client, who did not commit the crime, but has no physical evidence? The attorney tells the jury to have "faith" in the unseen. Doesn't work that way does it? How can you have "unseen evidence"? How can it be evidence if you can't see it with our natural eyes?
We don't, we have faith that what we cannot see is there. Wow, pretty radical isn't it? It takes a little bit of faith when you are 10 years old and your going to jump into the deep end of the pool. You have never done it before, but you know how to swim, and you see people do it all the time, but YOU have never done it. This is just a little taste of having faith in God. We know He is God, we know He has done many, many, many miracles, we know He made everything around us including us, we know He can do whatever He wants to without limitation, BUT WILL HE? That is where Faith takes over.
How do you gain faith, again? Through experience. The more God answers your prayers, performs miracles in you life, the more your going to take that "jump into the deep end". You'll get to where you don't even hesitate, you just run and jump. God has MANY miracles for us, He is just waiting for our faith to catch up with His power.
I drove a trash truck for years. Every time they would add more customers to my routes it took a little time to remember where to go. Sometimes there would be changes to routes, the company I worked for would bid on a sub division who's contract was up, and be under bid by another company and the sub division would go to them, or we would get another company's sub division the same way and my weekly routes would become different. I was given a little town near Taylor Texas one time, I had to "route" the whole town making sure I did not miss anyone's trash while completing the route as fast as possible. I tried two or three different routes before I came up with the best one. After that it was just making sure I ran it the same every week. Repetition, that is the key to remembering how to do something. How does our faith grow? Because God answered the last 239 times we prayed, then it is easier to pray for the 240th time. As we see Him do what He says He will do, we become stronger in our faith.
"Faith" like the word "Patience" has become words that we, as Christians seem to despise at times. It is easy to tell others going through problems to be patient, where is your faith? But then when the "shoe is on the other foot" and we are the ones going through problems, "where is our faith?" Faith makes us stronger, and makes us wiser.
Hebrews 11:6
"And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him."
See, we already have some faith, if we believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is our savior, who died for our sins, came to earth to save us and is God's Son. We have faith, because there is not a single piece of physical evidence to prove this, at least that is what they tell us. It is all about faith. So exercise your already existing faith, and let it grow.
God has so many miracles waiting for us, it is just "US" that hinders them from becoming a reality. When we get to the place were we have enough faith, God will open the windows of Heaven and send those miracles down on us like a spring thunderstorm.
Let us help our faith grow, by believing what we KNOW to be. That our God has no limitations, no boundaries, no problems giving us His best.
